Dog biscuits or “Dog Bread” has actually been around since Roman times. It’s not a wonder really, since dogs have always been mans most loyal and faithful friend. And we love our fur babies, don’t we! This recipe is super easy to make, it has just 5 ingredients, everything is mixed by hand, and it truly is the best dog biscuit recipe ever!
I always bake these doggy biscuits for my German Shephard, and he absolutely loves them. When he hears that cookie jar open, he knows it’s treat time… paws scurrying on the floor, wagging tail, and a visible smile on his beautiful face.
These biscuits are also perfect for human consumption, just bump up the beef spread quantity to two teaspoons.

Prep Time: 5 – 10 minutes
Bake Time: 13 – 15 minutes
Oven Temp: 180˚ Celsius or 360˚ Fahrenheit
Yield: 20 Biscuits
Ingredients:
1 cup flour
80g butter
⅓ sliced dried meat (biltong/jerky/dried wors/cabanossi)
1 tsp beef spread (bovril/vegemite)
1 egg
Method:
Place the flour in a mixing bowl, and add the butter. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips to make a flaky dough.
Add the dried meat, *beef spread and egg into the flour and butter, and cut the mixture using a butter knife until the dough comes together. I find this really helps to avoid getting runny raw egg over your hands, and makes it much nicer to mix by hand once it’s come together. *If you don’t have beef spread in the country you live in, you can substitute this with a ½ tsp salt or a ½ beef stock cube.
Now squeeze the dough through your hands until it is uniform in colour and texture.
Greece a baking sheet with some butter, and then sprinkle it with a small amount of flour. Tap the sheet to spread the flour and then tip it over to remove any excess flour.
You can decide the shape of the biscuits you’d like to make. You can either roll the dough out and use a cookie cutter to make cute shapes, or place a tablespoon of dough on the baking sheet and press it flat using a folk.
Place in a pre-heated oven at 180˚ Celsius or 360˚ Fahrenheit for 13-15 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow to cool, and then treat your fur baby!
Stores in an airtight container for 2 weeks. Can be frozen for 6 months.
